Resources designed to meet curricular needs:
A wide range of resources/learning materials is provided
for all staff and pupils, in response to the needs of the curriculum,
cross-curricular issues and the cultural and recreational interests
of the school community. It is aimed to maintain a good balance
between provision of information resources, quality fiction and
materials for recreational use. Resources are purchased by the Librarian
in consultation with staff to ensure that curricular needs are met.
Suggestions for purchase from staff are always welcome, either individually
or through the departmental library rep. Staff are encouraged
to inform the Librarian of current and forthcoming projects, classwork
and homework so that stock can be accurately targeted to needs and
abilities, and available when required. The better
informed the Librarian of the current curriculum, the better the
resources and services available can be.
Whole class, small group or individual use of the
Library:
Visits by individuals, small groups or whole classes are
welcomed during lesson time, as required by the individual teacher/department.
Individuals and small groups must be accompanied by a 'Pupil
Release Form', available from the Library or from the folder
on the Library noticeboard in the Staff Room - these must be shown
by the pupil on arrival and ensure that these visits are purposeful
(and legitimate!) and that the Librarian can give appropriate help.
Whole classes should be booked in to the Bookings File
in the Library to avoid double bookings.
Subject Resource Boxes:
A service which brings part of the Library to the classroom!
Arrange to borrow a specially selected range of
resources, chosen to target appropriate age and ability levels,
on a chosen topic/for a particular subject. The box is ready for
collection when needed and is then returned afterwards for pupils
to use independently for homeowrk or follow-up tasks.
Learning and Information Skills Programmes:
The Library runs, in consultation with staff, a Learning
and Information Skills programme for all Year 7 pupils in the first
term, reinforced by departmental visits to the Library to practice
and consolidate these skills in all years through curriculum-related
research. Lessons can be planned jointly to work on specific learning
skills and develop pupils' independent research and study skills.
Assistance with information retrieval:
The Library provides assistance for staff and pupils in
locating appropriate resources, both from within the Library's own
stock and from external sources, as necessary.
Stock lists:
Lists of stock in particular subject or topic areas or
on particular themes can be compiled by the Librarian at the request
of individuals or departments.
Current Awareness Service:
A current awareness service advises staff of articles of
relevance, new publications and new additions to the Library.
Book Talks:
Book talks to pupils in (or out) of the Library on particular themes,
genres or subjects.
Display of pupils' work:
The Library is always pleased to receive pupils' work for display,
and would welcome working with departments to produce displays to
tie in with current projects ands schemes of work. Relevant books
and resources to support the pupils' work could be highlighted.
Competitions and other book- or curriculum-related promotions.
